The Project

Trafalgar Place is a circa £4.6m residential development with Lend Lease and will be a significant step in the £1.5billion regeneration of the Elephant & Castle area in the London Borough of Southwark. Its seven buildings range from 4 to 10 storeys, include 235 apartments from studios to 3 bedrooms and showcase the latest sustainable construction techniques, and greener, more energy efficient design. They meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 – with energy efficient lighting, heating and water recovery systems, better insulation and ventilation. This ensures that they will be 30% more energy efficient than current regulations require, and enable you to use 30% less water than the average London home.

Project Objectives

Energy efficiency and community were the key ingredients to the Trafalgar Place recipe. As Elephant and Castle prepares to undergo its major £1.5billion pound regeneration it was key to this particular project that even though 235 brand new homes were being built, it would be designed on the heritage of the area and be built to encompass the community. For example its facade was designed with the historic local Peabody Estate in mind, and at the heart of the development, Paragon Row, a tree-lined, car-free street, complete with a biodiverse rain garden. There are electric installed chargers to 20% of the car park spaces and with the energy efficient lighting, heating and water recovery systems installed we have beaten government regulations by 30%.

Project Challenges

HE Simm’s drive for efficiency and quality means that techniques such as pre-fabrication are consistently explored. HE Simm was tasked to develop and design a prefabricated Energy cupboard module to encompass the plant for Heating and ventilation within the apartments. This was successfully achieved to the Clients satisfaction and the module now produced will serve as the benchmark for the development going forwards.
