The Project

As the UK’s only specialist neurosciences NHS Trust, the Walton Centre provides a range of neurosurgery, neurology, pain, spinal and rehabilitation services to patients from all over the UK.

This project took place over 3 phases.

The 1st phase of the works, Project Arizona, involved the phased remodelling of The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Works commenced in June 2012 and were completed in December 2012, ahead of program with zero defects.

Our works included complete heating, ventilation, hot and cold water services, medical gases, sanitaryware, controls, drainage, life safety systems, lighting and power, cctv, security, fire alarms and nurse call systems.

The 2nd and 3rd phases consisted of works to a new ward, theatre and MRI Unit, which again was handed over with zero defects and on time and within the cost budget completion of works the overall contract period being 70 weeks.

Project Objectives

The Walton Centre development was part of the hospital’s strategy to extend its services, increase the capacity of the Trust and improve patient facilities. They aimed to provide the highest standard of care possible and offer a ‘world-class’ service. To help them achieve this, we installed a number of state-of-the-art systems, along with a new MRI suite, new operating theatres and refurbishment to existing wards.

Our objectives were to handover all phases on time, within the cost restraints, with zero defects and no disruption to the Trust whilst the works were being undertaken

Liaison and teamwork were key to the success of this project.

Project Challenges

All of the works were undertaken in a working hospital, with services in other areas and wards being maintained throughout. Therefore, we had to work with extreme care and accuracy, renewing and tapping into various existing services during normal operations. We were careful to minimise noise and disruption to staff and patients. This required numerous meetings with the Trust and principal contractor to programme these works accordingly.

The Results

HE Simm was awarded repeat business after each phase was delivered successfully and our client’s expectations were met or exceeded. All phases were completed either on time or ahead of schedule and we delivered our promise of exceptional quality by achieving zero defects across all phases. Our ongoing commitment to the highest standards of health and safety also meant that there were no injuries or incidents throughout the duration of the scheme.

Meet the Team

Simon Smith, Electrical Apprentice

Simon saw worked on this project from the beginning to conclusion and saw it through all 3 phases. He was able to learn about and install numerous services beneficial to his career such as lighting controls systems, nurse calls, BMS and general electrical services. He was subsequently awarded by the client for his safe work and endeavors throughout the project.

“I found HE Simm to be a skilled, efficient, knowledgeable and communicative team that had a thoughtful ability of reading drawings and specifications to determine the layout of all construction systems and installations i.e. the planning of works, installations of mechanical & electrical systems in building construction environment.”
