The Project

Located adjacent to the Digbeth branch canal, Alumno’s new £30 million ‘Eastside Locks’ development provides bespoke student accommodation in the heart of Birmingham city centre. Building services providers HE Simm undertook the Design and Build MEP services for this development which provides 659 beds in the form of  ensuite bedrooms in clusters of 2-8 rooms; as well as common rooms, a retail unit and ground floor office space.

HE Simm will deliver Hot & Cold water systems, gas, heating, cooling, mechanical ventilation, sprinkler system, dry risers, smoke extract systems, above ground drainage, rainwater pipework, BMS, thermal insulation, LV switchgear & distribution, rising busbar, general & emergency lighting, small power, structured cabling, TV, access control, video intercom, CCTV, fire alarm & detection, earth bonding, lightning protection, disabled alarm, induction loop, metering & electric heating.

Project Objectives

The ‘Eastside Locks’ development is part of the city’s Eastside regeneration project. In contributing to Birmingham’s academic stature, the vision was to provide a modern, high quality student accommodation scheme, designed to complement and enhance the adjacent canal location complete with the integration of efficient building services.

Project Challenges

The precast build suffered from various delays resulting in us having to work very closely with the main contractor on what became a very tight and demanding programme that required constant monitoring and the continued production and implementation of short term programmes.

This project is still ongoing with completion due August 2016
