The Project

Located on Woodhouse Lane, the centre of Leeds bustling student quarter, the project consisted of 2 multi-purpose teaching blocks offering state of the art facilities, accompanied by a stunning 22 storey purpose built student accommodation offering ‘as far as the eye can see’ views over the Leeds landscape. HE Simm undertook the design and build MEP services for the 240 student bed tower and 2nd Academic & Administrative buildings totalling 100,000ft2 for Downing Construction

Project Objectives

The ‘Broadcasting Place’ development is part of the university’s strategy to replace its stock of student accommodation and provide a first class student experience. The university wanted to develop a scheme which demonstrates its ongoing commitment to meeting government carbon reduction targets. These ‘eco residences’ were, therefore, designed to utilise environmentally-friendly technologies and achieve an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating. To meet these requirements we implemented green roofs and a heating system which runs off spare capacity from the university’s existing district heating infrastructure, requiring no new plant.

Project Challenges

The development’s location, on the site of an active university teaching block, meant that ongoing build had to be done with minimal noise and disruption due to the site’s centrality and proximity to a bustling student community.

The Results

The project was completed well within its scheduled handover date of September 2012, handing over in the summer of 2012, allowing the building to be occupied on time and ensure all students were able to enjoy their new facilities.
