A Day in the Life of Jack Potter – Plumbing Apprentice

Jack has a number of important roles throughout his apprenticeship with HE Simm. Jack spends four days on site and one day in college combining his learning on site and in college. During a normal day Jack will help with basic duties, taking receipts of deliveries and ensuring they are taken to the workface. Jack has always wanted to work within the construction industry with a strong trade behind him. Jack decided to be an apprentice with HE Simm as he saw it as a growing company and wanted to be involved with a business that could provide him with long term opportunities for Jack to better himself.

6.00am – 8.00am I get up and get myself to work, currently I am working on the £2.3 million Liverpool One project on Seel Street in Liverpool.

8.00am – 12.00pm Firstly I catch up with my mentor and see what is expected from me today and the rest of the week then I get all my tools ready for my day ahead which can vary from day to day. This morning I am fitting the guttering for the rainwater, this incudes clipping the brackets from the gutter to the building to ensure all the rainwater goes through the guttering and does not leak.

12.00pm – 1.00pm Lunch

1.00pm – 4.00pm After lunch I start on a different task, so I’m not doing the same thing all day and I’m always learning something new. This afternoon I’m fitting the traps for the showers and the shower trays. The project I am currently on has three towers ranging from six, seven and eight storeys high, so I’ve got a lot of shower trays to fit.

4.00pm – 6.00pm As the day is coming to an end I start to clean down my work area and all the tools I have used throughout the day and then travel home.
